Tips for Cleaning Pillow Inserts
Jan 29,2026
Don't worry if your pillow insert turns yellow or smells musty—the right method can make it like new! Cleaning methods vary by material, so first identify your pillow insert's composition:
Select Cleaning Method by Material
Synthetic Fiber Pillow Inserts (Polyester, Soybean Fiber, etc.): Most common and easiest to clean.
Machine wash: Use mild, neutral detergent and hot water. Dry promptly in a dryer or spin-dry to restore loft.
Hand wash: Use warm water with neutral detergent. Avoid laundry detergent to prevent hardening.
Down Pillow Inserts: Require more delicate care.
Hand Wash: Use 30°C lukewarm water with a neutral detergent or down-specific cleaner. Soak for 10-15 minutes, then gently agitate. Never wring dry. Wrap in a towel and press to absorb water, then air-dry in a well-ventilated area.
Latex Pillow Core: The most delicate, requiring cold water hand washing.
Hand Wash: Use cold water with a small amount of detergent. Clean using a “squeeze-release” motion to avoid pulling. After washing, place in a shaded, well-ventilated area to air dry. Avoid direct sunlight or tumble drying.
Silicone Pillow Core: Easy to clean with excellent weather resistance.
Hand/Machine Wash: Use a neutral detergent. Lay flat to dry in a well-ventilated area, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Memory Foam/Plant-Filled Pillow Core: Not recommended for washing.
Memory Foam: Air in a ventilated area for 30 minutes, or replace directly.
Plant-Based Fillings (e.g., Buckwheat Hulls): Empty the filling, sift out debris, then air-dry in sunlight, or replace directly.
Cleaning Tips for Stubborn Stains
Baking Soda Soak: Add half a cup of baking soda to warm water. Soak for 1 hour before machine washing to effectively remove yellowing and odors.
Hydrogen Peroxide Spot Treatment: Spray 3% medical hydrogen peroxide on yellowed areas, let sit for 15 minutes, then gently brush before machine washing with oxygen bleach.
Wind Oil Penetration: Apply wind oil evenly to yellowed spots, gently rub with a cotton swab, then soak in 40-50°C (104-122°F) hot water for 15-20 minutes. Yellow stains will significantly fade.
Post-Washing Care & Mite Removal
Air Drying: After washing, place the pillow in a well-ventilated, shaded area to dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight. For down-filled pillows, gently fluff the core after drying to restore loft.
Dust Mite Removal: After washing, treat with a dust mite spray or use one of these methods:
Sun Exposure: Place the pillow in a black bag and expose it to direct sunlight for 2 hours.
Freezing: Wrap the pillow in plastic wrap and freeze for 24 hours.
Homemade Mite Remover: Mix equal parts rubbing alcohol and rose water in a spray bottle. Spray onto the pillow, then dry thoroughly with a hairdryer.
Washing Frequency and Precautions
Washing Frequency: Wash pillow inserts every 3-6 months. Change pillowcases weekly.
Precautions:
Avoid wringing vigorously to prevent damage to internal structure.
Refrain from using harsh detergents like bleach or laundry powder to prevent fiber damage or yellowing.
Rinse thoroughly to ensure no detergent residue remains, which could irritate skin.
